Let the Journey Begin

Edibles History

Edibles have a long history dating back to 1000 BCE in the ancient Hindu and Chinese texts. Today, edibles have made a transition from a medicinal hashish remedy, infused into coffees and teas, to now a product that can be revered by culinary genius’ looking to make an art of an already elegant 5-course dinner.

The differences edibles can have on the mind and body are noteworthy and we will dive into those differences, benefits, and even drawbacks on this journey. Let’s begin!

Edibles are Different

To start this journey, it is worth mentioning that the main difference between vaping, smoking, tinctures, and edibles is all in how they are administered. Vaping and smoking have a quick onset because the smoke is inhaled into the lungs, dispersed into the bloodstream, then up to the brain within seconds to minutes. Tinctures are administered sublingually and have a little more delayed onset, about 15-30 minutes, but the phytocannabinoids make it into the bloodstream quickly then up to the brain.

Edibles have the longest onset time, between 1-3 hours. This longer onset time is due to the body having to break down the edible in the gastrointestinal tract (GI tract), metabolizing it in the liver, then dispersing it into the bloodstream and up to the brain. Since edibles are metabolized differently, they do have different effects on the body and mind that can be more pronounced. Education on how they interact with your body is very important for the best results.

Edibles are not perfect.

With anything great in life, there are also drawbacks associated with them. Some of the drawbacks with edibles are as follows:

Longer onset time when you may need immediate relief.

  • Can affect everyone differently depending on their own genetic makeup and the enzymes in their GI tract.

  • Potentially lower bioavailability because the body cannot metabolize all the phytocannabinoids present in the product.

Many People Can Benefit From Edibles.

Some examples of consumers who can benefit from edibles are as follows:
Needs relief from chronic pain for longer periods of time.

  • Cannot inhale smoke or has lung issues.

  • Wants to keep their consumption discreet when in public.

  • Needs more body pain relief.

  • Experiencing problems with appetite or insomnia.

  • Loves a relaxing treat after a long day of work.

  • Pets who have trouble with anxiety.
